BUYING REAL ESTATE IS A FISHING TRIPIf you don’t like fishing as much as you did when you were younger, just pretend this article suggests that Real Estate is a Shopping Spree instead … unless you can have fun reading about fishing and buying real estate. Fishing is something we do when we have friends nearby to go on a little journey with. The weather is summery, clear and fresh. We’re relaxing by a placid lake or a singing stream. Traveling to Bella Bella, Williams Lake, Haida Gwaii or our favourite memorable spot with family or mates to share in a centuries-old tradition. Full of sweet excitement, fond memories, new hopes. Preparation. The excitement of getting ready for a holiday, a new experience, traveling to see new or familiar places. Yes, buying real estate has the same powerful, entrancing, captivating set of feelings and sensations. Our mind envisions the big catch … the dream home. We put our Open House clothes on, perfect Feng Shui colours that match our happy state, our positive feelings. Don our open-country gear. The anticipation, the looking in the real estate papers and online is just as powerful as getting the rod, gear and fishing magazines out. The chemistry is flowing, it’s time to be going. For sure, fishing by the lake or from our boat is going to be more fun than sitting 9 to 5 in the office most of the year. Our spacious, light-filled, warm, enticing, relaxing home will be so much more to our needs and liking than the cramped, dark, damp closet we’re living in now. Enough negative thinking. We’ve been dreaming about our new home for how many years now? Okay, let’s get positive and focused. Go out the door, into the car. Which lake will we go to catch that stellar dream fish? What part of town do we want to live in? Do we want a sturgeon this time? A trout? A salmon? Whitefish? Halibut? Or lingcod? Will it be an ocean-front property? A mountain view? A herb and flower garden? Townhome or condo? How much choice do we have over what we catch? Lots of fish to fry on the market these days, I hear. Thinking about the past. You used to frown and get upset when you thought about the big one that got away… someone scooped it up and bought it right from under our nose when we were about to reel it in and sign the deal! Or maybe it was the Realtor who was asleep on the job; it’s his fault we lost the line. Anyways, we’re over it now; we’ve forgiven them. It was all perfect; that house just wasn’t for us. This time we know we’ll get the home we want. This fish is going to stay on the hook, we’ll be able to reel it in. Better be on our toes this time. Have more focus. We’re out on the water. We’re in the flow of the streets of town. Where’s the best place to set up the fishing line and net? Which house to view first? What’s our intuition tell us? Go to the first place that comes to our mind; not the second, it’s never as good. There’s a house for sale around the next corner. “Turn here, honey!” The sweet spot to catch the fish is just over there. Let’s go! Well, the park ranger at the door of the Open House seems friendly enough. Not some grumpy old bear. Got some nibbles for us, a welcome smile, that nice brown outdoorsy suit that goes with the décor. They’re attentive without trying to tip the boat or tangle our lines. They let us wander on our own; very respectful. I’m liking this. How about the home? It feels right as soon as I walk in the door; something in my heart says, “YES!” And my body sensations are a perfect mix of down-to-earth groundedness and a flutter that says, “Could this really be the one?” Well, you know, this time I’m going for it; last time I lost out, it slipped away, couldn’t bring it into my boat. Whoa, the fish just jumped onto the line; it’s not even putting up a fight! Here it is, surfacing beside me. I look at the fish, it eyes me. We’re going to be friends for a very long time, I just know. “Hey, Mr. Realtor, I don’t fish much, and I don’t know how to take the hook out of its mouth. And I really want to keep this fish! Can you walk me through the Contract of Purchase and Sale? How much down payment do I need, and deposit money? When can I take possession? Heck, will you be my Realtor? That’s what you’re trained for at University anyways, isn’t it? “We landed the big one this time? Wow, 32 pounds. Let’s get a photo of us standing beside it.” I’m so happy I could cry. The journey draws to a close. “What a spectacular, eventful day. Wasn’t sure we’d find the right house, and there it was, just jumped right out at us! Beautiful lines and colours, like a salmon. Front entrance has all the charm of a large-mouth bass; it’s so perfect! The west coast rooflines remind me of an Orca’s fin. It’s got enough room for a 28-foot sturgeon inside.” We’re happy from the excursion; time to dream and see ourselves living in our new home. Drifting off, ‘Hey Hon, that was so much fun, we won’t have to go fishing again for quite a few years!” Posted by Jose Albis Friday Aug 27, 2010 08:24 |
